New Scrappy Pillow and More for Halloween!

Happy October!

Don't you just love October? It's one of my favorite months of the year—crisp air, colorful foliage, everything pumpkin spice, and, of course, Halloween!

To help celebrate the spookiest season, I've got a brand new pattern to tell you about. It's my Boo Pillow Sham and it's an absolute treat to make!

The Boo Pillow Sham is designed to be made with a mini charm pack of 2½" squares. I made mine with All Hallow's Eve by Fig Tree & Co. for Moda, paired with a solid black background fabric. There are a lot of fun Halloween fabrics out there right now, but you can also use scraps of your favorite Halloween prints from your stash—whatever suits your taste. Just make sure that your background fabric contrasts sufficiently with your prints so your letters will pop! The pattern for the Boo Pillow Sham is now available in my Etsy shop.

If you've got little ones in your life, or if you're young at heart, I've got two fun projects that are a little bit spooky, but oh so sweet.

First up is The Boo Crew, a mini quilt featuring four charming ghosts surrounded by a zig zag border. At 16" square, it's also a great size to be made into a pillow.

Second, is Monster Mash, a 19" square fusible appliqué quilt that is fast and fun to make and perfect for beginning quilters.

And if you're looking for a quilt that's more of a challenge, but so worth it, here's Glow in the Dark—my all-time favorite Halloween project!

Glow in the Dark measures 30" square and features small scale Pinwheel, Flying Geese, Friendship Star, and Shoo Fly blocks in scrappy shades of orange, purple, and black.  Love to piece?  Then this quilt is for you!

The patterns for the Boo Pillow Sham, The Boo Crew, Monster Mash, and Glow in the Dark are all currently available for download in my Etsy shop

Enjoy your October and if you have time for some holiday stitching, Happy Quilting!

Hocus Pocus

It's a gorgeous summer day out there, but today I'm thinking about Halloween!

My Hocus Pocus table runner is featured in the September/October 2017 issue of McCall's Quilting available now online at the Quilt and Sew Shop and wherever magazines are sold.

My starting point for designing this quilt was the Snail's Trail Blocks.  While making a variation of Snail's Trail blocks for another project, I realized that the swirly, twisting quality of the blocks could be kind of creepy—almost like arms reaching out—and I decided to try to use them in a Halloween project.  I tried them in the center of the quilt first with mixed results, but when I decided to use the Snail's Trail Blocks as a border, I loved the spooky result!  Using colorful Grunge fabrics by Moda for this quilt added texture and sparkle without detracting from the overall pattern.

Hocus Pocus screams Halloween, but the pattern is surprisingly versatile.  On page 31 of the magazine, the McCall's team shares a lovely and scrappy Christmas version of the quilt, and here's a summery idea made with beachy blues:

It's a totally different feel, but just as fun!

If you'd like to make the Halloween version of Hocus Pocus, McCall's Quilting has exclusive kits available at the Quilt and Sew Shop.  In the kit, you'll find everything you need to make the quilt, including backing fabric.

Happy Quilting!

Halloween Candy - Free Mini Charm Pack Pattern

Happy Holidays, fellow quilters!  It's only July, but today I'm celebrating Christmas and Halloween with my latest Moda Bake Shop tutorial.

Christmas Candy is a 14" mini quilt that I made with a mini charm pack of gorgeous "Petites Maisons de Noël" fabric by French General for Moda.

This little project is fast and easy, but my favorite part is the simple backstitched poinsettias and vines and French Knot berries that wind their way around the red and green patchwork center.

Christmas Candy is also a great portable project—once you've assembled the quilt top, it's the perfect size to take along with you for some summer stitching.

Not quite ready to think about Christmas?  Here's Halloween Candy, a pillow version of the project made with "Hocus Pocus" by Sandy Gervais.

This spooky pillow is embellished with spiderwebs and spiders.  You can find the embroidery pattern here.

I made Halloween Candy the same way as Christmas Candy (find the tutorial here), with just a few adjustments:
  • Before embroidering, I layered the pieced quilt top with both batting and a muslin lining panel.
  • Instead of machine quilting this project, I simply stitched an "x" across each of the junctions (through all layers) in the center patchwork.

  • And rather than binding the project, I used the following steps to turn it into a pillow:

Finishing the Pillow
  1. Cut two 10" x 14½" panels from your backing fabric.
  2. Fold one long (14½'') edge of a panel toward the wrong side ⅜'' twice and press.
  3. Stitch the hem close to the fold.
  4. Repeat with the second panel.
  5. Layer one panel on the embroidered and trimmed quilt sandwich, with right sides together and raw edges aligned.
  6. Layer the remaining panel on the opposite side of quilt sandwich, with right sides together and raw edges aligned.
  7. Stitch through all layers using a 1/4'' seam.
  8. Trim the corners to reduce bulk, turn the pillow sham right side out and insert a 14" x 14" pillow form.

Whether you choose Christmas or Halloween, mini quilt or pillow, if you'd like to make this fun mini charm pack project, you can find my free tutorial at the Moda Bake Shop.

Happy Stitching!

Call Me Miss October

That's right, "Miss October!"  I'm a calendar girl again!  Don't worry, I'm not that kind of calendar girl -- can't quite pull that off -- but I am the kind of girl with a quilt in a calendar.

It's American Patchwork & Quilting's 2016 Calendar, to be specific, and it is gorgeous!  The calendar features 12 beautifully photographed projects that range in size from a sweet little Easter table mat, to full-size bed quilts.

And here's my quilt, "Glow in the Dark."

"Glow in the Dark" is a scrappy Halloween quilt that looks great hanging on a wall or displayed on a table.

This quilt is one of my all time favorites.  I especially love how the variety of orange and purple fabrics seem to sparkle in contrast with the black.

And while the quilt is 30" x 30", the small pinwheel, star, and shoofly blocks give it a charming, miniaturesque feel.  By the way, if "miniaturesque" is not a word, it should be!

If you'd like to make your own version of "Glow in the Dark," American Patchwork & Quilting's 2016 Calendar is now available online through the Meredith Store.  Detailed instructions and patterns for all of the quilts are included in a full-size and full-color supplement.

Happy quilting and Happy Halloween!

Mini Pumpkin Quilt Pattern

Remember the little door knob quilt I made for Valentine’s DayWell today I woke up inspired to make one for Halloween.  I love how it turned out and it takes no time at all.

Here's what you'll need:

Orange fabric:
 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” squares
16
 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares
 7" x 7" square for backing

Blue fabric:
 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” squares
 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares
1 – 2 ¼” x 25” strip  for binding (I actually used a small length of binding left over from another project – yes, I’m a scrap hoarder)

Brown fabric:
 1 ½” x 1 ½” square

You'll also need a 7" x 7" square of batting, a scrap of green wool, green perle cotton or embroidery floss, basting adhesive, and 12” twine.

And here's the pattern:

To make the orange/blue half square triangles, place an orange 2 1/4" square on a blue 2 1/4" square with right sides together and edges lined up.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the orange square.  Stitch a scant 1/4" on either side of diagonal line.  Press seams.  Cut on diagonal line and press open towards the blue.  Trim half square triangle to 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".  Makes 2 half square triangles.  Repeat for remaining set of 2 1/4" squares.

Referring to the photo, lay out the 4 half square triangle units, 16 orange 1 1/2" squares, 4 blue 1 1/2" squares and 1 brown 1 1/2" square to form the pumpkin.  Join together half square triangles and squares to form rows.  Join together rows.  Press.  The pumpkin top should measure 5 1/2" x 5 1/2".

Cut a leaf shape from the green wool and pin it to the pumpkin top.  Appliqué the leaf to the pumpkin using green perle cotton and a whip stitch.  Stitch veins on the leaf using a big running stitch.  Stitch the vine using a back stitch.

To make the quilt sandwich, spray basting adhesive to the wrong side of the pumpkin top and with your hands press it to the 7” x 7” square of batting, right side up.  Spray basting adhesive to the wrong side of the orange 7” x 7” backing square and adhere it to the other side of the 7” x 7” batting square.

By the way, this was my first time using spray basting adhesive and I think I’m in love!  But I digress.

If you’d like to quilt the pumpkin by machine or by hand, now would be the time.  Trim the sandwich to 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" and use your favorite method to bind the quilt.

For the hanging loop I found a length of twine, tied a knot at either end and stitched the knots to the upper back of the quilt.  And voila!  C’est fini!

If you’d like your pumpkin quilt to look a little more Halloweeny, try embellishing it with an appliquéd or embroidered jack-o-lantern face instead of the green leaf.  Either way, happy quilting and Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Ok, so this post has nothing to do with quilting, but I can't help myself.  To celebrate Halloween and with a nod to next week's election, may I present to you the candidates...

Yes, my boys decided to dress up as Mitt Romney and Barack Obama and I can't remember the last time I've laughed this much.

Here's Mitt borrowing a page from Nixon...

And here's Barack showing off his dance moves...

Here are the candidates at the Halloween costume parade last Saturday...

The boys were clearly hamming it up and did their best to field some tricky questions parents had about the economy and foreign policy.  To their delight they took home the prize for "Funniest Costume," and they managed to divide up the prize without any arguments in a wonderful display of bipartisanship.

I won't tell you who was more popular at the party.  Lucky for me I'm an independent and I love them both equally!!

Happy Halloween!
